This book is divided into three main sections, one having three sub-sections. The author has mastered such forms as the paradelle, sestina and villanelle. “Whitlow croons the blues of a strong-hearted woman singing herself out of the past.” Among her various subjects are poems about love and marriage, as well as family history. Several are based in Detroit where the blues and the Motown sound come alive. Vanished was the winner of the 2006 Naomi Long Madgett Poetry Award.

Carolyn Beard Whitlow is a Charles A. Dana professor of English at Guilford College in Greensboro, NC where she teaches creative writing and African American literature. She wrote her first poem at thirty years old while she was a Ph.D. candidate at Cornell University. Subsequently she completed an MFA degree at Brown University where she won the Rose Low Rome Memorial Prize in Poetry and was named Phi Beta Kappa Poet in 1989. Her first collection of poetry, Wild Meat, was published in 1986. Vanished was the winner of the 2006 Naomi Long Madgett Poetry Award.
