For this collection of interviews with Armonía Somers, Griselda Gambaro, Julieta Campos, Elvira Orphée, Luisa Valenzuela, and the now deceased Marta Traba, Evelyn Picon Garfield chose six outstanding authors who have made a significant contribution to prose fiction in Latin America. Each interview, translated by the author into English, is preceded by a biographical sketch of each of the women as well as a brief critical introduction to her work which places it within the context of Latin America's rich literary and cultural heritage. Discussed are such topics as the relationships between men and women, politics, civil strife, passivity, social change, and the explorations of individual and national identities.
