Flemish and German Paintings of the Seventeenth Century

Julius S. Held
The outstanding collection of European paintings at the Detroit Institute of Arts has established it as one of America's major museums. This catalogue presents 17th-century Flemish and German paintings, works from a period of great richness and splendor in the history of art. Especially well-represented in Detroit are the pictures of the great Baroque master Peter Paul Rubens; paintings of every type produced by the artist and from each phase in his career are included here. Works by other Flemish Baroque masters, such as Antoon Van Dyck, Jacob Jordaens, Abraham Brueghel, and Jan Brueghel the Elder, are also included.
This catalogue is written by Professor Julius S. Held, one of the foremost authorities on Northern Baroque painting in the world today. Professor Held has re-examined the more than fifty works and written extensive entries on each of them, as well as concise evaluative biographies of each artist represented.
