Alexander J. Walt: Reflections

Edited by Scott A. Dulchavsky and Seymour I. Schwartz
Foreword by David Adamany
Internationally known, Dr. Alexander J. Walt (1923-1996) expanded the breadth of surgical education. Dr. Walt believed that "a cultured surgeon is a better surgeon," and instructed his residents on the importance of being welll-rounded individuals. Dulchavsky and Schwartz bring together a collection of Dr. Walt's papers that demonstrates his keen wit, humor, and the personal challenges that characterized this great surgeon. Included are his visionary works on graduate medical education, compassionate patient care, and the future of surgery for the twenty-first century.
Each of the papers in this collection includes a commentary by a major American surgeon that places it within historical context and calls attention to the special contributions made by Dr. Walt.
Alexander Walt was Distinguished Professor of Surgery at Wayne State University; Chairman of Surgery for 22 years; Chief of Surgery at Detroit General Hospital, Harper Hospital, and then Harper-Grace Hospital; and President of the American College of Surgeons, the highest rank that can be conferred by members of the profession.
