What’s under Michigan?

Michigan is easy to find on a map of the United States because it is surrounded by the Great Lakes. From above, Michigan’s Lower Peninsula looks like a mitten, and its Upper Peninsula (or U.P.) reaches out into Lake Superior, the world’s largest freshwater lake. It’s even easy to see Michigan from outer space.

Michigan’s surface is covered with green forests and sparkling blue lakes. There are big, busy cities and small, quiet towns all over the state. We can all see what Michigan looks like from above, but have you ever wondered what’s under Michigan?

Under Michigan are all kinds of rocks and fossils. Some were left behind by ancient tropical seas and some from volcanoes that erupted into fiery fountains of hot molten lava. Some were left behind by icy-cold glaciers more than a mile thick that scraped across the land, leaving the Great Lakes in their trail.
