Assist Director and staff in identifying fundraising needs and priorities for the University Press, a nonprofit publishing arm of the University. The Press publishes approximately 35 new books and 6 journals each year and is internationally recognized for its program in Jewish studies, African American studies, film and television studies, fairy tale studies, and regional studies. Focus will be on building the Press's endowment and establishing funds to support particular areas of study at the Press as well as building the Press's Circle of Friends. Develop fundraising action plans and strategies; establish realistic and achievable project schedule and timetable; serve as a resource on successful development activities, techniques and methods.

Coordinate and participate in the identification, cultivation and solicitation of individual donors; conduct and oversee direct mail and one-on-one solicitations (i.e. direct phone contacts and personal visits) to strengthen constituent relations and increase donor gift revenues.

Coordinate and participate in the identification, cultivation and solicitation of major corporate and foundation funding. Identify corporations and foundations with interest in University Press needs (i.e. sponsorship of individual books, book series, the Press generally, etc.), develop related proposals and assist the Director and staff to cultivate and solicit corporate and foundation support in order to secure and increase major gift revenues.

Prepare acknowledgment letters and periodic stewardship reports to donors on the use, importance and appreciation of their support. Create special recognition events for the purpose of cultivating and stewarding donors which in turn results in renewed and increased major donor support.

Participate with volunteer committees to support fundraising campaign. Identify and recruit volunteers for specific projects and solicitations; train in appropriate cultivation and solicitation methods, techniques and processes; provide technical support and oversight of volunteers to ensure missions of the University Press and University are attained.

Coordinate, develop and implement major events, activities, receptions and outreach programs to increase giving. Oversee the preparation of materials, develop agenda with various groups to establish, develop and maintain constituency relations. Provide oversight for related financial records and statements. Interface with various University and University Press personnel, committees, Board and outside groups in coordinating and executing projects and events.

Oversee and coordinate transmittal of contributions to the Wayne State Fund Office in an efficient and timely manner. Resolve problems, provide information and answer any related questions.

Perform related work as assigned.  
Create and maintain mailing lists for donors, event attendees, customers, authors, board members, etc. for direct mail solicitations, invitations to Press events, and other mailings.


The University Press is unlike other University departments in that we don't have an alumni base. We are unique in that we offer a product in many different areas of interest that can be purchased or supported. This position offers the right candidate an exciting opportunity to build a development program.  
Graduation from an accredited college or university or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience. Advanced degree in marketing, public relations or business desirable.

Considerable development experience with major gift solicitation experience.

Extensive volunteer management experience.

Project management experience.

Considerable experience and knowledge of planning, developing and implementing special fundraising events, programs and activities.

Strong organizational skills.

Strong analytical and problem solving skills.

Excellent written and/or oral communication skills.

Ability to communicate effectively with others.

Capital campaign and planned giving experience preferred.

Higher education development experience preferred.

Some experience with electronic data systems preferred.

Typically, incumbents have held a lower level Development Officer classification or have experience with major gift solicitation and management of a large volunteer structure.  
Experience with the scholarly book publishing industry is preferred.

Experience with and interest in the arts and cultural community of Detroit and the University is preferred.
