Wayne State University Press publishes in a wide range of subject areas for a variety of audiences including scholars, students, and the general public. The areas in which the Press is most active are reflected in its publishing program. Letters of inquiry and/or book proposals are welcomed in these areas. Below is a set of guidelines for preparing proposals to send to us.
Potential authors MUST submit a completed Potential Project Questionnaire in order for their proposal to be considered.
• Prepare a brief project summary describing the scope, length, and audience for the book. Please provide an estimated word count for the completed work (the Press considers manuscripts between 75,000 and 150,000 words.)
• Include a Table of Contents.
• Include a detailed chapter-by-chapter outline, and describe any back matter such as appendices and bibliographies that are planned.
• If your work is an edited volume, indicate which chapters are reprinted and which are original, and include the affiliations of the contributors.
• Indicate if there are to be illustrations and describe their type and approximate number. When preparing images for publication, refer to our guidelines for image submission along with this supplemental information [PDF downloads.]
• Include the Introduction or Preface in addition to at least one sample chapter.
• Include your resume, or c.v.
• If you wish your materials to be returned, include a self-addressed, stamped envelope large enough to hold them and with sufficient postage. Otherwise your materials will be recycled.
• Please submit completed manuscripts on request only.
• The Press does not publish original dissertations, festschriften, or original fiction. Authors wishing to revise their dissertations for publication are asked to consult The Thesis and the Book, edited by Harman and Montagnes (University of Toronto Press, 2000).
• Articles for publication in journals should not be submitted to the Press - contact the journal directly.
