Book of Fables
The Yiddish Fable Collection of Reb Moshe Wallich

Translated and edited by Eli Katz
Book of Fables is a bilingual edition of Sefer Mesholim, an important collection of fables published in Yiddish in 1695. The work occupies a significant and interesting place in Yiddish literary history as it provides valuable insight regarding the development of Yiddish language and literature, and offers an unusual perspective on the cultural and social life of contemporary European Jewry as well.
Eli Katz has translated the thirty-four fables of Sefer Mesholim, derived principally from the Aesopic canon, and from both medieval Hebrew and medieval German sources.
This comprehensive volume presents 115 reproductions of the original pages with handsome, intricate, woodcut illustrations opposite the translations of the text.
"The first English translation of these thirty-four wry, witty, and utterly charming tales. Most of the fables are Aesopian in nature . . . All are based on Jewish belief and daily life. This is an extraordinary piece of scholarship by Katz, a careful yet lively translation (presented along with the original Yiddish), and a most delightful and instructive book, with wonderful wood-cut illustrations."—Library Journal
